Thinking about our games look, we decided to work in a sketchy  and handdrawn style. Colour is only used for points of interest.

First Level, A Story Draft

4 11 2009

We’ve just developed the first scene for our game.
Oh, the following is subject to change, but it’s a start!
Beginning with a short intro, showing a little guy, Tommy, sitting in the classroom and having his English class. Because his teacher is so darn boring, he starts drawing little sketches on his textbook, and as he gets more and more tired, he falls asleep.

Shortly afterward he wakes up and asks his teacher, Mrs. Buröll, if he can go to the toilet. She nods and Tommy walks out. The next thing you see, is Tommy sitting on the Toilet and as he pulls the lever, he gets sucked down into the toilet.

Next scene is a room very similar to the previous. Just one door is open and you don’t hear anything. But suddently the Toilet starts shaking and with a huge burst of water, Tommy is shot out of the toilet and lands with his face on the ceiling – and then, as the water burst falls off, he lands on the ground.

Not knowing where he is, Tommy is approaced by an angry, slightly obese person. The person is talking in English (from this moment on, almost everything in the game is in English). With nervous gestures, the man tells Tommy to grab the mop in the corner and mop up the puddle the toilet incident left behind.
This is the Tutorial of our game. It is planned to have a screen display the major controls of the game just as Tommy meets the man.

After Tommy mopped up the puddle, the man grabs Tommy by the scruff of the neck and Throws him out of the door.
The door unleashes the next chain of unfortunate events: As it rapidly opens, it slams directly in the face of a fat working-class englishman – wo drops all his candy and snacks on the floor (Begin of the first real level of our game, “Food” – Unit 2 in the textbook we’re working with)

The man is observably upset that all of his candy fell to the floor and he starts yelling at Tommy. And then, he sends tommy to bring him some items from the nearest store -> A minigame begins, in which Tommy has to put the right kind and the right amount of food in his Bag.

Alright – that’s enought story for now, we’ll be working on storyboards soon. A Gameplay detail we’ve decided upon (since our game relies heavily on the use of language – both German and English) The game will be entirely in English, with one exception: If Tommy keeps failing his task, he starts an inner monologue in german, to help the player with the task.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned.

Elevator Pitch 2.0

27 10 2009

without knowing where he is or how he got there, little tommy awakes in the unfriendly england. searching for his way home he depends on his communication with cranky englishmen. to be supported by them, he has to accomplish several minigames, teaching him about the english language and culture. if tommy fails the communication with the angry englishmen, they get visually and acoustically angrier. to avoid a fight, tommy relies on jokes or his incredible ability to make faces. (as a reaction game, for example)
